H-E-B Tournament of Champions Awards $115,000 Grant to Moody Clinic for Adapted and Inclusive Therapy Playscape
BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Moody Clinic is proud to announce that the H-E-B Tournament of Champions (H-E-B TOC) has awarded the organization a $115,000 grant to transform its existing playground into an Adapted and Inclusive Therapy Playscape, creating a safe, accessible, and therapeutic space where our patients with special needs can play, explore, and build skills.
The transformative project will reimagine Moody Clinic’s existing playground with adapted features designed specifically to support children with a wide range of physical, sensory, and developmental needs. The new playscape will provide patients with opportunities to practice skills addressed during therapy while enjoying the benefits of outdoor play in a safe and welcoming environment.
The project represents an important step forward for Moody Clinic and its patients. The existing playground has been closed since February 2026, making the H-E-B TOC grant a meaningful milestone toward bringing back a space where children can play and families can enjoy time together before or after therapy sessions.
“For many of our patients, access to a safe and accessible playground is not something they have at home,” said Jessica Ray Cuevas, Chief Executive Officer of Moody Clinic. “This playscape will give children with special needs the opportunity to simply be children—to play, explore, socialize, and practice the skills they are developing in therapy. We are incredibly grateful to H-E-B Tournament of Champions for helping us bring hope, progress, and play back to our clinic.”
The Adapted and Inclusive Therapy Playscape will incorporate features that encourage physical movement, sensory exploration, coordination, balance, social interaction, and independent play. By creating an environment designed with the needs of children with special needs in mind, the playscape will complement Moody Clinic’s comprehensive rehabilitative therapy services.
The H-E-B Tournament of Champions grant is part of the organization’s longstanding commitment to supporting nonprofit organizations serving children and families throughout Texas. For more than 35 years, H-E-B TOC has invested more than $100 million in nonprofit organizations focused on the needs of children and families across the state.
“H-E-B Tournament of Champions is proud to support Moody Clinic and its efforts to create an adapted and inclusive space where children can play, grow, and thrive,” said Lacey Kotzur, Public Affairs Manager at H-E-B Tournament of Champions Charitable Trust. “We are honored to invest in projects that make a meaningful difference in the lives of Texas children and families, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact this playscape will have on Moody Clinic’s patients and the community it serves.”
The Adapted and Inclusive Therapy Playscape project will mark three important milestones in Moody Clinic’s partnership with H-E-B Tournament of Champions. The first is the announcement of the $115,000 grant and the launch of the project. A groundbreaking ceremony, with a date to be announced, will formally mark the beginning of construction and the transformation of the existing playground. Once construction is complete, Moody Clinic and H-E-B Tournament of Champions will celebrate the project’s completion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, with the date to be announced.
Together, these milestones will celebrate not only the transformation of a physical space, but also the return of an important opportunity for Moody Clinic patients to experience the joy and developmental benefits of play in an environment created with their unique needs in mind.“Play is an important part of childhood, and it is also an important part of how children learn and develop,” said Cuevas. “We cannot wait for the day when our patients can once again step outside, explore their new playscape, and experience the joy of playing safely alongside their peers. This project will give our children a place to be active, curious, and carefree—and that is something worth celebrating.”
Moody Clinic is deeply grateful to the H-E-B Tournament of Champions, its Trustees, H-E-B Partners, suppliers, and vendors for their investment in this project and their continued commitment to improving the lives of children and families throughout Texas.
