System Administrator: Full-Time

JOB SUMMARY

The System Administrator installs, maintains and monitors the operation of the City's local and wide area networks and servers. Determine system configurations, maintenance and data backup schedules and monitoring tools and procedures. Maintain and monitor day-to-day citywide network operation, server performance, and perform corrective action as required, or notify supervisor of alarms and failures. Perform administrative functions associated with managing users and devices. Assist in network and server center troubleshooting and problem resolution.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Apply server operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
  • Manage and maintain citywide anti-virus and anti-spam solutions.
  • Manage and deploy switches, routers, NGFW, and wireless access points.
  • Assist in managing user and group information within Active Directory and Google Workspace, Group policy, DNS, DHCP, NPS, SNMP, IEEE802.11, LLDP, VTP, EIGRP, NAT, SSH.
  • Assist in configuring, implementing and managing cloud, SaaS and hosted applications.
  • Manage network printer installation and driver maintenance.
  • Manage email security cloud gateway.
  • Manage server room rack organization and cable layout.
  • Install or replace network cabling properly identifying ports and utilizing proper cable management materials and supplies.
  • Configure, maintain and support the storage area network (SAN), network storage devices (NAS) and server virtualization equipment.
  • Design, install and maintain interconnection with remote sites, wireless networks and Internet connectivity.
  • Monitor systems for security threats or unauthorized users and utilize security systems to ensure data integrity and restrictive access to approved users.
  • Build, test, and deploy server hardware.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on hardware to achieve optimum performance.
  • Design and implement backup procedures to ensure that backups of all network device configurations, servers and all other essential data are performed on a regular basis.
  • Configure and maintain all critical systems, network security, high availability, data backup and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Must be able to work outside on surveillance cameras and PTP equipment.
  • Assist with development and implementation of a disaster recovery plan.
  • Manage, administer and support the City’s VoIP telephone equipment.
  • Assist in managing the Audio/Video equipment in the Council Chambers.
  • Assist in managing the City’s building access system and City’s surveillance systems.
  • Monitors and maintains virtual machines in the City’s VMware environment and MDM.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining PC, mobile and network standards, hardware inventory and software licensing documentation.
  • Assists with Emergency Operations Center technology operations when needed.
  • Compiles, maintains and files all physical and computerized reports, records and other required documents.
  • Assists with the daily operations of the City’s IT Department documenting helpdesk tickets in helpdesk software.

 

SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides support to city departments to update and manage the content of the city’s website.
  • Assists in posting agendas, meeting materials and recording city meetings.
  • Must be able to work after hours or on-call when required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

FISCAL BUDGET RESPONSIBILITY

  • Responsible for adhering to all City of South Padre Island Purchasing Policies while performing purchasing tasks.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with coursework into computer science, management information systems, or a closely related field.

Experience:

  • Five (5) years of related work experience in progressively responsible analysis, design, development and management of server and network infrastructures work, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience, equivalency to be determined by the City.
  • Senior level experience and advanced skills required for one or more of the following areas: Network Security Systems and Software, Virtual Software Define Networks, Citywide, Campus and Metropolitan LAN Network Planning & Design ,Fiber Optic and DWDM Networks, VMware SAN Environment, or Wireless and RF Networks.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) or have the ability to obtain certification within 6 Months from the date of employment.
  • A valid state driver’s license.

Special Requirements:

  • Bilingual: Spanish and English preferred.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

All computer networks, personal computer systems, phone, copy, fax machine, postage machine, ladder, ladder lift vehicle, industrial tools, network testing equipment, vehicle, computer tools and video cameras.

This position is required to climb ladders and use equipment lifts to perform the essential functions.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is normally performed inside an air-conditioned office. On occasion employee will be required to use ladder to run cable or wires behind walls or in dropped ceilings.  This work environment may be hot, humid and dusty.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.  Employee will be required to use personal vehicle to travel between worksite locations regularly.
