Sea Turtle Inc. Braces For 2nd, More Intense Cold Stun Crisis of the Season
Expected This Week

South Padre Island, TX: Sea Turtle Inc. staff are urgently preparing and responding to a dramatic plunge in temperatures, facing a critical environmental emergency for the second time in just two weeks. Cold Stun events are life-threatening, as the water drops to dangerous levels, causing sea turtles to lose the ability to regulate their body temperature. The turtles are awake but completely immobile, unable to swim or move. Without immediate rescue, these sea turtles will inevitably drown because they cannot lift their heads to breathe. For over 46 years, Sea Turtle Inc. has been the lifeline for South Texas in these devastating cold-stun events, and in 2021, they responded to an unprecedented crisis, rescuing over 5,500 cold-stunned turtles in just 8 days.

Wendy Knight, CEO of Sea Turtle Inc., emphasized, "This is our second cold stun event in just two weeks so not much time to recover from the last winter storm. Our team and volunteers are prepared and fully equipped to meet the overwhelming demand. We stand ready to continue our mission to save as many sea turtles as possible." The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated, and every moment counts in saving these vulnerable creatures.

“Given current predictions, we have deployed boat patrols for mid afternoon on Tuesday and expect foot and boat patrols to continue through the end of the week.” says Wendy.
Although Sea Turtle Inc. has successfully managed these emergencies in the past, the opening of their new hospital is eagerly awaited, as it will provide essential resources and much-needed facilities to better respond to future cold stunning events.“We are rapidly working to complete construction on the largest fully enclosed sea turtle hospital in the world,” says Wendy “Having the hospital complete for these types of events will have a critical impact on the survival rate and the response capability of our organization.”
